One of the biggest changes in Emailer is that all mail messages are now kept in a database instead of individual files. This can save a tremendous amount of hard disk space.. Occasionally you should rebuild the database in order to reclaim space where mail messages have been deleted. To rebuild the database, just hold down the option key when launching Emailer. You will see a dialog box asking you if you would like to rebuild the database. There are two options for rebuilding the database. Always choose the Typical Rebuild option first. If you have problems after rebuilding the database with the first option, then you should choose the Advanced Rebuild option. After the database is rebuilt, relaunch Emailer and make sure everything is working OK. If things are OK, then open the Claris Emailer Files Folder. Inside this folder, you will find your newly rebuilt database and index file along with the old ones. Go ahead and delete the old files. Recently, I did this and it shrunk my mail database over 4 mb. This can also repair some problems that may occur to the mail database

Netscape
There are several ways to determine if you have loaded an entire web page.
ΓÇó If the Stop button in the toolbar is grayed out, then you have the entire page.
ΓÇó Watch the status bar at the bottom of the browser window.
ΓÇó The neatest way is to look at the small Netscape icon in the top-right corner of the window, next to the toolbar. While the page and graphics are loading, you will see a meteor shower streaming across the icon. When the meteor shower ends, the page and graphics are completely loaded.

ClarisWorks
Claris has taken the famous Macintosh drag and drop one step farther with Click and Drop. Just highlight some text then go to another location in you document, hold down the Command-Option keys and click the mouse button where you would like the text to go. The highlighted text will instantly move to the new location. This only works in ClarisWorks 4.0v4 or later.
Type 800-SOS-APPL into a ClarisWorks document and then spell check the document. ClarisWorks flags the phone number as a unknown word and offers a single alternative word. CESSPOOL One has to wonder what is going on here. IsnΓÇÖt Claris and Apple supposed to be friends and partners! If anyone does not know, the phone number is AppleΓÇÖs Toll Free help line.

Macintosh Trivia
Those of us that have been around Macs for longer than we care to admit know this little secret. If you open the case of any early Mac such as a Mac+ or Mac128k, you will find etched on the inside cover the names of the original 47 Mac team members. These names are in every Mac produced up to the SE models. Among these names is one that keeps cropping up - Steve Jobs.

Note Pad
If you click on the number at the bottom of a note pad page, you will be shown a small dialog that will tell you how many pages are in your note pad and let you jump to a specific page.
Puzzle (Pre-System 7.5)
If you open the old Puzzle desk accessory, you are normally given a puzzle of the Apple logo to complete. If you chose clear from the Edit menu, the Apple Logo will be replaced by the more traditional numbers for you to unscramble.
Alarm Clock (Pre-System 7.5)
If you have the Alarm Clock desk accessory open, you can choose copy from the Edit menu and then paste the time into your word processor.

Adobe Illustrator 6.0 Easter Eggs
If you click the Adobe icon in the About Illustrator, you will see a dazzling 15 minute display that is wonderful to sit and watch.
If you hold down the option key while clicking the status box at the bottom of the window, you will get a choice of 7 displays such as the number of shopping days left to Christmas, the national debt and more.

Conflict Catcher Easter Eggs
Here are some special tricks along with a great Easter egg.
ΓÇó You can type command-. at any time during the startup process to skip the remaining extensions and jump directly to the Finder.
ΓÇó Type Command-R to restart your Mac while it is loading extensions.
ΓÇó Type Command-S to shutdown your Mac while it is loading extensions.
ΓÇó Hold down the Tab key to freeze the startup process after the last extension is loaded. Releasing the key lets the Mac finish starting.
Open Conflict Catcher in the Finder and click on the version number in the lower-right corner of the window to see a great About box with rolling credits. Hold down the option key and the credits will go in reverse.
With the hidden About box still open, type the word ΓÇ£playΓÇ¥ and nothing else. You can then play a great game.
In version 3 of Conflict Catcher you can play Extensions Invaders and in version 4, you can play a breakout game.

Finder
DonΓÇÖt forget about the Command-Shift-3 key combination to take a picture of your screen. I use this quite a bit to get many of those screen shots you see in this newsletter.
If you are using System 7.6, you can also use Command-Shift-4 to capture a small portion of your screen. Your cursor changes to crosshairs and you just drag to select the area of your screen that you wish to take a picture of. You will also hear a camera shutter as the picture is taken.

Movie Player
For a weird effect, try holding down the shift key and double-click the main window. The movie will play backwards with the sound also backwards.

Norton Utilities
I have just received the latest version of Norton Utilities. The version is now 3.5. One of the best things is that it finally comes on a bootable CD-Rom. As a side note, if you are using System 7.6, then you must use at least version 3.2.4 of Norton Utilities.
